S. June Smith Center Service Experience: Delaney Francis
My service experience at the S. June Smith Center and Excentia reignited a spark within me that has led to amazing adventures.
Working toward a degree in organizational leadership, this experience was an excellent opportunity to see the ins and outs of nonprofit management. Working hands-on with the senior leadership of Excentia was an inside look of what a potential career in this field could have in store. From the moment I arrived, I was able to immerse myself in the company culture that I never knew how much I missed.
During my week at Excentia, I assisted the event coordinator with one of S. June Smith Center’s most significant fundraisers, Flamingle. As a sorority woman, I know how impactful charitable giving can be on an organization, so this fundraiser was our main focus that week.
Assisting directly with preparations for this fundraiser included many specific tasks that easily translated to resume builders. I assisted Excentia’s event coordinator with publications, collaborated directly with Excentia’s Chief Advancement Officer on special projects including the creation of social media calendars and secured donations through a community outreach campaign to obtain donations from local vendors and corporate companies.
Since my experience, I have been able to use the skills I gained on projects that week to rekindle connections with past employers in the nonprofit field. As a result, I am now working as a marketing and communications professional for a company close to home and couldn’t be happier on my career path.
Without this experience, who knows where I would be today. I am thankful for the opportunity that Alpha Sigma Alpha gave me. The experience helped paint a picture for my future. I am happy to be following my purpose and making a difference in my local community every day.
