Poise & Purpose

Alpha Sigma Alpha promotes high ideals and standards for its members throughout their lives by emphasizing balance among our four aims of intellectual, physical, social and spiritual development.

This is my creed.

With Alpha Sigma Alpha, you will experience a lifetime of unconditional love, an unlimited number of moments of laughter, and countless opportunities to learn more about yourself, your sisters, living with integrity and intellectual advancement.

“The aim of this Sorority shall be known…for its four-fold purpose the
intellectual, physical, social and spiritual development.”
The Ritual of Alpha Sigma Alpha

The aims of Alpha Sigma Alpha have been carefully chosen to represent the ideals toward which every member is to strive. Alpha Sigma Alpha’s programming focuses on these four aims in an effort to develop and nurture women so that they may reach their full potential.

Our open motto, “aspire, seek, attain” is found today on each campus where Alpha Sigma Alpha is. Our members, women of poise and purpose, exemplify the spirit of our five Founders.

Louise Cox Carper, one of Alpha Sigma Alpha’s five Founders, said that, “the fundamental object of a sorority is to cultivate those qualities which will help its members to meet more successfully the events of life. The first duty of the sorority is then to nurture of the atmosphere of mutual love and fellowship in common venture.”

As a community of women of poise and purpose, it is up to us to challenge each other at all times, and to spread our influence abroad. Alpha Sigma Alphas strive to seek the best that is in us. We make the most with what we have and who they are. We do the thing near at hand, and great things come to our hands to be done.

Sisterhood

Forming strong bonds of unconditional friendship based on common values and experiences

Together, we have the opportunity

to collaborate with sisters who share the same values and ideals.

As a sisterhood,

our collective role is to take advantage of the strong bonds of unconditional friendship in order to inspire and be inspired to lead, serve and make a difference.  It is through our relationships that we have a network of women who motivate us to aspire, seek and attain.

The primary purpose of Alpha Sigma Alpha

is to foster close friendship between members. The unseen bonds of our sisterhood extend from state to state, binding groups of women in the great colleges and universities of our land into one composite family.

Heritage

Expressed through creed, ritual and history

As women of Alpha Sigma Alpha,

we live up to the highest in thought, word and deed through living each value of our Sorority.

Alpha Sigma Alpha, the first women’s fraternity founded in the Twentieth Century, was founded at Longwood University in Farmville, VA, on Nov. 15, 1901. As stated in the charter, “The purpose of the association shall be to cultivate friendship among members, and in every way to create pure and elevating sentiments, to perform such deeds and to mold such opinions as will tend to elevate and ennoble womanhood in the world.”

Signatures to this document include those of Alpha Sigma Alpha’s five Founders: Virginia Boyd Noell, Juliette Hundley Gilliam, Calva Watson Wooten, Louise Cox Carper and Mary Williamson Hundley. A tradition of diverse membership began with the first chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha.

“Life is a heritage handed down from one generation to another, with each adding a bit of beauty, courage and faith – it is not so much reverence for the past as a creative power to beautify the living moment.”

The Ritual of Alpha Sigma Alpha, Service for Founders’ Day

Alpha Sigma Alphas honor their heritage and all of those who came before them by living out the eight core values every day: balance, generosity, growth, integrity, learning, relationships, responsibility and enjoyment.

Leadership & Service

Enhanced by chapter, campus and community involvement

Our vision is to cultivate the values and ideals in women who are known for their character and concern for others.

We are looking for women who want to lead, to serve, and most of all, to make a difference.

Alpha Sigma Alpha offers many leadership opportunities within each collegiate chapter as well as on the national level. As a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, you will have the ability to hold leadership positions and truly make a difference in your own chapter, and you will also have access to leadership development in the form of national convention, leadership conferences, regional events and leadership development institutes.

Alpha Sigma Alpha provide volunteer opportunities through collaborating with three of our national philanthropic partners – Girls on the Run International, S. June Smith Center and Special Olympics.

Collegians are heavily involved with all of these organizations, whether volunteering at Special Olympics competitions, interning on-site at the S. June Smith Center through a service grant provided by the Sorority, or coaching girls for a Girls on the Run 5K race.

When Alpha Sigma Alphas get involved, great things happen!
