Personal and Professional Benefits of Joining a Sorority

I think we can all agree that Alpha Sigma Alpha changed our lives for the better and in a wonderful way, this means something different to every member. The beauty of sorority is that we offer a well-rounded experience where members can take advantage of a variety of opportunities that best serve their future goals. I truly believe that everything about sorority prepares us for life after college. Whether it’s personal or professional growth, each one of us has gained valuable skills.

With sisterhood comes social connections and with social connections come a happier life. I know it sounds cliché, but I met my life-long best friends and my future bridesmaids. I’ve met so many women that I connected with that I would not have met otherwise due to our separate degree programs. Now, I cannot imagine my life without these women. They are my shoulder to cry on, my excitement on a Saturday night, my go-to hype women and my ride or die. We shed the tears together, we have the tough conversations, but we persevere. You may not form strong bonds with every single member, and that’s okay. But together, we built a community based on shared values that make us better people and better friends.

Alpha Sigma Alpha inspires women to lead, to serve, and most of all make a difference. This is a powerful statement that resonates with our membership experience. Some members take on the responsibility of an officer position and experience immense growth when it comes to time management, leadership skills and determination. Members who serve on a chapter committee learn what it means to be a team player and are given a hand in creating a worthwhile membership experience. Members who attend any of our national events can build connections with other chapters all while given the option to attend sessions that interest them. I learned about managing effective chapter meetings, cultivating sisterhood, building resilience, fostering an inclusive environment, financial responsibility and body image.

Our sorority journey does not end at graduation. Alumnae are an essential part of our organization. They serve in a variety of volunteer roles to support our chapters. We provide advisory board, region team, project team and facilitation opportunities that all play a role in bettering the collegiate experience. Alumnae connect with our members and can serve as mentors who guide us through life’s adventures and set the example of what it means to be a sorority woman. The purpose of Alpha Sigma Alpha is to foster close friendships between members and to develop women of poise and purpose. The keyword is: develop. We all bring unique skills and perspectives to the table. But as each year passes, we have grown further towards this purpose. It is never too late to learn about yourself and grow from what you’ve learned and Alpha Sigma Alpha will be there to support you every step of the day.
