Alpha Sigma Alpha eliminates National Policy on Legacies
On July 21, 2020, Alpha Sigma Alpha National Council voted to eliminate the National Policy on Legacies. This is just one of the many steps Alpha Sigma Alpha will be taking over the next few years in response to the organization’s recent diversity, equity and inclusion audit. Chapters will no longer be required to invite legacies to the first invitational round of recruitment and will no longer be required to notify the related member when releasing a legacy.
Alpha Sigma Alpha values relationships including those that exist among family members. Alpha Sigma Alpha will continue to recognize legacies and celebrate lifetime membership and the bonds of sisterhood, but potential members who are legacies will no longer receive preferential treatment during the recruitment process.
The new Alpha Sigma Alpha Statement of Position on Legacies can be found HERE.
Below are ways that members can support Alpha Sigma Alpha recruitment and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.
Understand legacies. The definition of a legacy has not changed. An Alpha Sigma Alpha legacy is defined as a sister/step-sister, daughter/step-daughter, granddaughter/step-granddaughter, niece/step-niece of an Alpha Sigma Alpha member. It is important a potential member chooses an organization where she feels a sense of belonging and the chapter makes its own membership selection decisions. The ultimate decision as to whether or not an invitation to membership is extended is that of the collegiate chapter. Sorority-family connections may be celebrated after an invitation to membership is extended and accepted.
Encourage Sorority Membership. Direct potential new members to TheSororityLife.com to learn more about joining a sorority. Tell them about your Alpha Sigma Alpha experience. Encourage them to research sorority recruitment at their campus.
Refer a member. Members and non-members may submit a referral form. All referral forms submitted via www.alphasigmaalpha.org are forwarded to the collegiate chapter for consideration. Potential members are not required to have a referral in order to join Alpha Sigma Alpha.
