Alumnae or collegiate chapters, as well as individuals, may request permission to offer membership into Alpha Sigma Alpha to a woman who is not affiliated with a National Panhellenic Conference sorority. Permission to initiate a woman will be granted by Alpha Sigma Alpha’s director of alumnae engagement. Please note that all paperwork must be turned in 6-8 weeks prior to the initiation to allow time for processing and badge shipment. An alumna initiate does not receive her certificate until after she is initiated.
All alumnae initiates will be initiated into a collegiate chapter. The region facilitator and director of alumnae engagement will assist alumnae in locating a collegiate or alumnae chapter who can assist in the initiation. During the initiation by the collegiate or alumnae chapter, the new alumna member will sign the chapter signature book and be enrolled as a member of that collegiate chapter. She will have an initiation number from that chapter.
In the event that there is no collegiate chapter close to the alumna, the director of alumnae engagement will contact a collegiate chapter and have the chapter mail their signature book to an alumnae chapter. The alumnae chapter will perform the ritual service. If a ritual trunk is needed, the alumnae chapter may request that one be shipped from national headquarters to be used for the service. The alumnae chapter will ship the ritual trunk back to national headquarters immediately after initiation.
A collegian or alumna must submit the following:
1) Completion of this online application which includes general contact information of both the sponsor and candidate.
2) A letter of recommendation for the initiate (from the sponsor) stating how the potential member incorporates at least 5 of the 8 ΑΣΑ core values in her life
3) A letter from the potential member stating why she wants to become a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha and what her membership would add to her life. (Please collect this prior to completing this application so you may submit as an attachment)
4) Payment (check or credit card) for the membership fee must be submitted to Alpha Sigma Alpha Headquarters immediately AFTER approval. Payment information can be found at the end of this application.
Upon receipt of the above items and approval of initiation, national headquarters staff will send the alumna initiate a welcome packet that includes ΑΣΑ’s membership education materials. The membership badge will be ordered and shipped directly from the jeweler. The certificate and membership card will also be ordered and will be shipped directly from the printer. The new member will also receive a subscription to the Phoenix magazine.
