Membership Education for Parents/Caregivers
Many parents or caregivers may wonder what the new member experience will be like. Alpha Sigma Alpha has a strict, no hazing policy for all of our members. Our hazing policy is listed below.
Alpha Sigma Alpha forbids hazing.
The term “hazing” means any intentional, knowing, or reckless act committed by a person, whether individually or in concert with other persons, against any individual or group of individuals, regardless of affiliation, whether or not committed on chapter property, for the purpose of recruiting, joining, pledging, initiating, admitting, affiliating, or for the purpose of retaining membership in an organization that causes an individual or group of individuals to do any of the following, regardless of a person’s willingness to participate:
a. Be coerced to violate federal, state, provincial, local law, or organizational policy.
b. Be coerced to consume any food, liquid, alcoholic liquid, drug, or other substance in any non-customary manner which subjects the individual or group of individuals to a substantial risk of emotional or physical harm which includes but not limited to sickness, vomiting, intoxication, or unconsciousness.
c. Endure brutality of a physical nature, including but not limited to whipping, beating, paddling, branding, dangerous physical activity, or exposure to elements or endure threats of such conduct that results in mental or physical harm.
d. Endure brutality of a mental nature, including but not limited to activity adversely affecting the mental health or dignity of the individual, sleep deprivation, exclusion from social contact or conduct that could result in extreme embarrassment or endure threats of such conduct that results in mental or physical harm.
e. Endure any other activity which adversely affects the health and safety of an individual, including but not limited to the disruption of academic performance or class attendance, required designated driving programs, line ups, calisthenics, or personal, physical, or financial servitude.
The national organization will investigate any report of hazing.

The membership education of all of our members is focused on the core values, aims and history of Alpha Sigma Alpha. Membership education is offered for the four primary stages of membership: new members, initiate members, senior members and alumnae members. Once a member has completed the requirements for the new member education program and has been initiated she will work through the initiate member program and subsequent education experiences. Members complete reflective activities online using the members-only resources. New members are also provided with a member manual that is used during new member meetings. The manual contains historical information for all members to use as they learn more about Alpha Sigma Alpha. Upon initiation, all members receive a ritual reflection journal which can aid in their personal reflection and development.
Components of this program are designed for:
- New members – orientation into Alpha Sigma Alpha
- Initiated members – self-exploration focused on congruence between personal and organizational values
- Senior members – transitioning from college; understanding individual purpose as a citizen of the greater community
- Alumnae members – continued growth and reflection on organizational aims and values through life stages
