Alumnae membership: Supporting Alpha Sigma Alpha’s philanthropic partners

A

As members of Alpha Sigma Alpha, we are encouraged to express our care and concern for others through support of national philanthropic partnerships and local communities. As our ritual states, “Life is not taking in only; it is giving out too. It is giving ourselves – freely – to other people, giving ourselves in comradeship, in understanding, in joy, in love.”

The shared value of generosity unites Alpha Sigma Alpha sisters across the world through all stages of membership. Support of the Sorority’s philanthropic endeavors is a way for alumnae members to remain engaged with Alpha Sigma Alpha long after graduation.

At this time, Alpha Sigma Alpha has four national philanthropic partners members support from around the country, and the world, in a variety of ways.

Special Olympics

Alpha Sigma Alpha adopted Special Olympics as a philanthropic partner in 1976. With sports at its core, Special Olympics is the world’s largest movement dedicated to promoting respect, acceptance, inclusion and human dignity for those with intellectual disabilities.

Alpha Sigma Alpha members can support Special Olympics in many different ways. For those looking for hands-on volunteer experience with Special Olympics, connect with the Special Olympics chapter in your area to learn how you can provide support in preparation for and at events.

Members can also support Special Olympics through fundraising initiatives, the most popular being the Polar Plunge. The Polar Plunge is a fundraiser held by local state Special Olympics headquarters and affiliate organizations where money is raised in support of Special Olympics before participants jump into a pool, lake or ocean. Members can support Special Olympics by making a donation to Polar Plunge fundraiser, or by helping to raise money and taking the plunge.

Girls on the Run

Alpha Sigma Alpha established a partnership with Girls on the Run in 2012. Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity-based youth development program for girls.

The program teaches life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

Girls on the Run has over 200 councils throughout the country. Each council has various opportunities for Alpha Sigma Alpha alumnae looking to support this organization through volunteering. Opportunities include assisting at 5K events or coaching girls through Girls on the Run’s curriculum.

Use Girls on the Run’s Find A Council feature to get more information on how you can become involved with Girls on the Run in your local area.
