How do I start a collegiate chapter?

Expansion and colonization process

We beleive in expanding our national organization and growing our membership. Alpha Sigma Alpha collaborates with universities and colleges to add new chapters of Alpha Sigma Alpha. Extension is defined as the addition of a new sorority to a college or university. Extension is pivotal to the growth and development of the national organization. When Alpha Sigma Alpha considers a campus for extension different criteria is used to determine if a campus is a good match for the organization. This criteria is reviewed by the national headquarters staff and national council.

Once a university/college invites Alpha Sigma Alpha and that invitation is accepted, colonization begins. Colonization is the process of forming a new chapter on the campus. Prior to a chapter being installed, they are referred to as a colony. Colonies are installed into chapters after reaching benchmarks in recruitment, chapter operations and membership education. The weekend of installation is filled with sorority festivities— ritual, sisterhood receptions and a formal banquet. Alpha Sigma Alpha's around the world wear ribbons in celebration of the addition of a new chapter. Members of the newly installed chapter will be signified as founding sisters and will be marked into Alpha Sigma Alpha history.

Alpha Sigma Alpha is dedicated to successful colonization's. The national organization supports the new colony on all levels—local, district and nationally. Leadership consultants, district and national volunteers, local advisory council, and staff create a support system that is designed for each new colony. Alpha Sigma Alpha founding sisters create a legacy that lives forever in our sisterhood.

Working with National Panhellenic Conference

Alpha Sigma Alpha welcomes questions regarding colonization and starting new chapters. As a member of the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), Alpha Sigma Alpha abides by polices set forth by NPC, that all sororities agree to follow. These rules help to govern the extension process. The National Panhellenic Conference has an Extension Committee to assist colleges and universities with the process of starting new chapters. You can contact the NPC administrative office at npccentral@npcwomen.org by contacting the NPC office they can help begin the process of extension.

If you are a local sorority that is not affiliated with an NPC group and would like to be affiliated with Alpha Sigma Alpha, please contact us at asa@alphasigmaalpha.org. We are happy to answer any questions you may have.
