Scholarship

Intellectual Development is one of the four aims of Alpha Sigma Alpha. Our members are challenged to strive for their best intellectual development through setting high academic goals, regular classroom attendance and class participation. Chapters focus on academic achievement through incentive programs, study buddies, recognition, tutoring and study skills education.

There are scholastic benefits to sorority membership. On many campuses the all-sorority grade point average is higher than the all-women’s average. Additionally, it has been shown that women who join sororities tend to complete college at a higher rate than women who do not join. Graduating with Alpha Sigma Alpha Scholarship programs also identify minimum standards and provide opportunities for women who are struggling with their academic responsibilities.

Invitation to membership in Alpha Sigma Alpha is based in part on high academic performance. In order to be considered for membership, a woman who has completed one collegiate academic term must have at least a 2.25 term grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale. A woman who has not completed one term must have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale in high school. All initiated members must maintain at least a 2.0 term grade point average to realize all benefits and privileges of chapter membership.

Chapters strive as a whole to meet high scholastic standards. Each chapter must maintain a 2.6 average on a 4.0 scale each term to maintain good standing. Chapters who do not meet this requirement are placed on academic probation. Many of Alpha Sigma Alpha’s chapters are ranked in the top quarter of sororities on their campuses.

The Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation believes that learning should last a lifetime, and the Foundation’s commitment to that belief is carried out through both graduate and undergraduate scholarships.
