Leadership
Membership in Alpha Sigma Alpha offers vast opportunities to make a difference through leadership. Members develop leadership skills which are ultimately advantageous in the work place. There are numerous opportunities to hold an elected or appointed office, to chair and serve on committees, or to attend leadership schools, officer academies or national conventions. Through the committee system of leadership, members can practice leadership skills, be involved in the day-to-day operations of the chapter, and assist in decision-making even if they do not hold an office.

Through programming and involvement in the chapter, members learn lifetime leadership skills. Chapter officers are provided with the Collegiate Officers’ Handbook which has helpful hints on delegation, conflict management, dealing with difficult people, goal setting and stress. Members gain leadership skills through running chapter meetings, planning events, confronting difficult situations and mentoring other chapter members. Through leadership conferences and workshops, the sorority teaches its members to be principle-centered leaders who base their decisions on values and ethics.
The sorority also encourages its members to be involved outside of the chapter. One way is through the campus panhellenic council which promotes cooperation between all sororities on the campus. Chapter members also commit their time and talents through involvement in campus organizations such as student government, peer education, residence life, honor societies, political groups, campus programming and athletic teams.
Scholarships are awarded by the Alpha Sigma Alpha Foundation to individuals interested in attending national leadership training seminars sponsored by the university or other organizations.
Opportunities for leadership in Alpha Sigma Alpha don’t stop at graduation. There are many leadership opportunities for alumnae. There are five executive offices available in alumnae chapters. Being a part of an alumnae chapter keeps members informed of how the organization is running and allows them to be part of national convention.
Members advance their leadership skills through alumnae chapter meetings, serving as advisors for collegiate chapters, planning events, and just mentoring collegiate members. Alumnae may also give back as a national volunteer. Becoming a national volunteer not only advances leadership skills, but also gives members an opportunity to participate at a national level.
