A message from the national president to ΑΣΑ volunteers

Originally posted on April 20, 2009

Dear Sisters,

Cindy Kelley, National PresidentSure, we know the significance and importance of the ruby and pearl to Alpha Sigma Alpha. But did you realize we have another valued jewel - our volunteers. One of Alpha Sigma Alpha's greatest treasures is our volunteers.

For without you - our volunteers, we would not be the strong organization we are. We would not have chapter advisors, district leaders, and national team members serving as mentors to our collegiate women, liaisons to our campuses and advocates for our alumnae. So, as we celebrate National Volunteer Week, April 19-25, please accept my most sincere thank you for all you do for Alpha Sigma Alpha and her members on a daily basis.

Alpha Sigma Alpha inspires women to lead, to serve and most of all to make a difference. Thank you for modeling the way for all of our members and for giving of yourselves freely to our beloved sorority. You are making a difference!

Love in AΣΑ,

Alpha Sigma Alpha welcomes Theta Eta Chapter

Posted on March 9, 2009

Feb. 7, 2009 marks a very special day for Alpha Sigma Alpha. It was on this long awaited morning that Alpha Sigma Alpha celebrated and rewarded the hard work and dedication of 20 young women by installing the Rogers State University Colony in Claremore, OK, as the 143rd chapter of Alpha Sigma Alpha and christening them the Theta Eta Chapter.

“In September 2007, eight women came together as founders on the Rogers State University (RSU) campus. We worked really hard to get here to today,” said Jill Whittenburg, ΒΓ, colony development Coordinator and Theta Eta chapter advisor, in her installation banquet speech.

This is a day that will be forever remembered by all the women who attended the events that took place that weekend at Rogers State University. Some of those women included the installation team, made up by Leadership Consultant Chasity Grome, ΘΕ, Membership Growth Coordinator Amber Shaverdi, ΗΗ, Colony Development Coordinator Jill Whittenburg, ΒΓ, and National Vice President of Membership Melissa Koch Merriam, ΕΕ. Other special guests included chapter members from Epsilon Epsilon, Beta Sigma, Beta Gamma, Eta Eta and Zeta Zeta.

All events took place in the university’s new student services center. Collegiate members of Epsilon Epsilon, Eta Eta and Zeta Zeta attended the white luncheon as well Gamma Gamma Chapter Advisor Kandee Almgren, ΓΓ. At the banquet, Chasity Grome served as the mistress of ceremonies and Jill Whittenburg served as the guest speaker. Toasts were given by Chasity Grome, alumna Rebecca Hamby and former RSU Greek Advisor Amanda Walker.

Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority recolonizes on SUNY Cortland campus

Posted on November 24, 2008

The colors crimson and pearl white will once again be seen on the SUNY Cortland, NY, campus. For about a year and a half, more than 50 students worked to bring the sorority back to SUNY Cortland. The SUNY Cortland Colony was officially recognized by the college in mid-October.

From Nov. 6-7, Alpha Sigma Alpha staff member Amber Shaverdi and District Facilitator Erika Butts visited campus to meet with interested women. Alpha Sigma Alpha formally established the colony for 42 new members on Nov. 8.

“This is my dream come true,” said Lauren Hedger, a senior special education and English major from Smithtown, N.Y. “We started this more than a year ago and it’s a goal we’ve been working toward. It feels great to have achieved it. I am so proud of all of the girls.”

Alpha Sigma Alpha was chartered as the Gamma Clio Chapter in 1946 at SUNY Cortland, but the chapter was closed in 1953 when the State University of New York forced all campus sororities and fraternities to sever their ties with national organizations because of the perceived exclusion of minority groups in some of these organizations. The Gamma Clio Chapter then became a local sorority called Alpha Sigma, which became inactive in the 1970s because of the declining interest in Greek organizations.

The Gamma Clio Chapter will join five sororities, four fraternities and one service fraternity at SUNY Cortland.

Alumnae interested in helping this group should contact Membership Growth Coordinator Amber Shaverdi at ashaverdi@alphasigmalpha.org.

New National Headquarters Facility

Posted on September 26, 2007

Alpha Sigma Alpha is currently in the stages of building a permanent headquarters facility located in Indianapolis, IN.

In the fall of 2006, the facility project team, comprised of Marianne Bullock, ΒΘ, Lori Scott, ΕΕ, Kim Benson, ΔΝ, and Krystal Slivinski, ΓΡ, began meeting to lay out the bidding and financing processes. In December of 2006, the formal bidding process began to select an architectural firm for the project. After reviewing the proposals received from several local firms, national council voted to select Cripe Architects + Engineers) as the architectural firm and Browning Construction) as the general contractor for the project.

On June 23, 2007, the Extreme Leader Weekend participants, members of the Indianapolis Alumnae Chapter, national headquarters staff and national council slipped on their "We Dig Alpha Sigma Alpha" gloves and literally dug in to get our building project started at the ceremonial groundbreaking.

Now that the project has officially kicked off, all members can see the progress of the construction through the Sister Circle group called "Operation New HQ". Pictures and building news will be posted throughout the construction process. To access this in Sister Circle, click on Groups, then click on Find Groups, select Indiana (center column), and lastly, click on "Operation New HQ".
